    Discover hidden and unexpected science in the Museum with behind–the-scenes secrets, pop-up talks, games and experiments.

    This is part of Brighton Museum’s monthly free days. 

    Release the starlings
    20th Century Gallery, ground floor, 10am-1pm
    Pick up a starling from the main gallery and try out new smart object technologies to see them come to life through projections that react to your movements.

    Embrace the darkness
    Willett Gallery, ground floor, 11am-4pm
    Make your own dark skies discovery badge, have a go at our space-themed feely box and discover the dark side of the South Downs National Park, a Dark Sky Reserve.

     Firefly game
    World Stories Gallery, ground floor, 2-4pm
    Try your hand at our fast-paced round table game played with biologically-inspired flashing LED badges and a healthy dose of competition.

    Insect instruments
    Museum Lab, 11am-4pm
    Make your own musical instrument inspired by the sound of cicadas and get up close and personal with some special minibeast guests from the Booth Museum.

    Experiment station
    Art Room, 11am-4pm
    Make a kaleidoscope or a bath bomb or muck about with magnets at our fun hands-on experiment station. Please supervise little ones particularly carefully!

    The science behind skeletons
    Museum Lab, 11am-4pm
    Have a go at figuring out which bones in the human body go where using our life-size bone mat.

    Colour in Constable’s time
    What did Constable paint with and where did he get his colours from? Curator Alexandra Loske takes a closer look at new pigments, artists’ materials and colour theory in the 18th and 19th centuries
